The Wednesday Wars

From Goodreads:
In this Newbery Honor-winning novel, Gary D. Schmidt offers an unforgettable antihero. The Wednesday Wars is a wonderfully witty and compelling story about a teenage boy’s mishaps and adventures over the course of the 1967–68 school year in Long Island, New York.

Meet Holling Hoodhood, a seventh-grader at Camillo Junior High, who must spend Wednesday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, while the rest of the class has religious instruction. Mrs. Baker doesn’t like Holling—he’s sure of it. Why else would she make him read the plays of William Shakespeare outside class? But everyone has bigger things to worry about, like Vietnam. His father wants Holling and his sister to be on their best behavior: the success of his business depends on it. But how can Holling stay out of trouble when he has so much to contend with? A bully demanding cream puffs; angry rats; and a baseball hero signing autographs the very same night Holling has to appear in a play in yellow tights! As fate sneaks up on him again and again, Holling finds Motivation—the Big M—in the most unexpected places and musters up the courage to embrace his destiny, in spite of himself.

From Me:
I LOVED this book.
I don't know what else to say.
A middle grade, Newbery Honor award winning book--that everyone should read!
Nostalgic, emotional, funny, compelling!
You'll fall in love with Holling Hoodhood.
I listened to the audio version and the narration was great, but I'm also going to purchase this for my bookshelf, so my grandkids can have easy access to it.
Loved it!!

Earlier in the  year, I signed up for the Newbery Reading Challenge, hosted by Julie at Smiling Shelves.
This is only my 2nd book in the challenge.
I better get busy--I have a few more to read before the end of the year.

Thimble Summer

From Goodreads:
When Garnet finds a silver thimble in the sand by the river, she is sure it's magical. But is it magical enough to help her pig, Timmy, win a blue ribbon on Fair Day?

Literary Awards

From Me:
At the beginning of the year, I signed up for the Newbery Reading challenge hosted by Julie at Smiling Shelves.
Children's literature has always held a special place in my heart -- just this past December, the week between Christmas and New Year's,  I read Charlotte's Web with 2 of my grandchildren. I love to see their reactions when reading-- and I've always wanted to read all of the Newbery Award Books.
I don't know if I'll get all of them done this year, but I do plan on reading at least one a month.
I started out with one that has been on my shelf for quite a while, Thimble Summer, first published in 1938.
While it didn't quite live up to "Little House on the Prairie"  in my mind, it was still a cute, fun read about a young girl on a Wisconsin farm in the 1930's.
The thimble did not play a big a part as I thought it might tho.
I have read other's by Enright and enjoyed them more  (Gone Away Lake was a favorite of mine), but the writing was good, simple enough for kids to really read and understand.  Sparks the imagination by  transferring you to a different time.  I would give it 3 stars.
It would be a good read-aloud also.

And that is #1 in my 2016 Newbery Countdown.
I have almost 100 years to chose from!

Newbery Reading Challenge 2016

First challenge accepted!
I will be participating this year in the 2016 Newbery Reading Challenge hosted by
Julie at Smiling Shelves.
To check out all the rules and guidelines, stop by her site and read up, then sign up.

I've always collected Newbery books, for my children's (now grandchildren's)  reading library  (housed in the spare room closet---but it makes a nice library nook)  but have not read any for a long, long time, so I'm very excited to start.

I am going aim for the L'Enlge level, which is 15 books.
I can read Newbery award books, honor books and even a Caldecott Medal winner to qualify for points.

I'm excited to begin!
