Honestly

Honestly....

I don't know if I can eat/use this sourdough. It smells, kind of "sour".
Buying a loaf of sourdough bread from your favorite bakery or having some sourdough biscuits made by your grandma is one thing (well, two things actually, but try to follow me here), but I..... have a weird idiosyncrasy.
I cannot eat anything the "day of" or past a due date.
I cannot eat food that has been in my fridge for longer than a day or two...and even the 2nd day is stretching it.
I'm weird, I get it.
I so wanted to make a good sourdough and make these cinnamon rolls. But I just don't know if I can make bread from something that is sitting out and getting smelly on my counter.
It's not natural to leave food sitting out and letting things grow in them. Microorganisms, to be precise.
I will try tho. Wish me luck

I will end with what we picked/harvested from our backyard yesterday. We thought it time to not let the birds get them (the grapes). And I have one green tomato left, a few jalepenos, and a bunch of apples that I need to pick.

Maybe some applesauce on Sunday? I'll blog about it.
I'm off tomorrow with friends to go to the "Taste of Home" Cooking show in Elko.
We're excited. We're spending the night. Girl time!!

Lucky you to go to the TOH show!

I'm a lot like you when it comes to food and leftovers. I think I could do the bread though. I have made the Amish Friendship bread that has to fermet on your counter.

I really think you need yeast for this. My recipe for sourdough starter calls for the following:

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons sugar
1 packet of active-dry yeast
2 cups warm water (105 to 115 degrees F.)

The process and time frame is the same you used, but it really does have that nice sourdough smell. I haven't made it in years, but I will try it again next week and let you know how it turns out. Good luck with yours.

I'm never sure where to respond to people who've commented in my blog... :~)
HoneyB...I KNOW!! I'm excited to go. I've had the Amish Friendship bread too, so I still have hopes for this one.

Terri.... I agree with you, I think I need some yeast and/or sugar. In the recipe I am using, he says that I could add a pinch of yeast, but then purists would look down thier noses at me. (that's okay with me). He says, tho, that the yeast is supposed to grow in there naturally.
I have my doubts.
Thanks for your recipe.

See what happens when I don't blog hop for a couple days... I miss all the excitement! I love that you're trying the sourdough thing! I am like you though in that I wont eat anything on the expire date and all that... my Mom-in-law, seriously now, has can of food she uses from like 5 and 8 years ago... ewwww! She's never gotten sick, but bless her heart, I don't let my kids eat at her house! I just... can't...! She's a wonderful woman, but just.. eww!

*hugs*

I always answer the comments like you did on this entry... much easier! But I know what you mean, for a long time I didn't know what to do either.
