First chapter, First Paragraph, Tuesday Intros

Today is Tuesday--- which means I'll be joining up with Diane at Bibliophile By the Sea and her
First Chapter, First Paragraph
Tuesday Intros.
Where,  bloggers post the first paragraph of a book they are thinking of reading --- and get everyone's opinion to see if it grabbed them from the beginning or not.

My Paragraph:

His fingers slithered like a snake to find hers.  She opened her palm and accepted them.  There was something about the commanding way he reached for her.  It felt like a statement.
You are mine.

What do you think?  Should I keep on reading?

I will keep reading as I've heard good things about it.  I do have to say tho, that if I knew nothing--that first paragraph sounds like this would be a romance novel (nothing wrong with that) but it's a mystery/thriller.
I'm anxious to find out.

Here is what Goodreads says about it:
Elementary school teacher Jacqueline “Jacks” Morales’s marriage was far from perfect, but even in its ups and downs it was predictable, familiar. Or at least she thought it was…until two police officers showed up at her door with devastating news. Her husband of eight years, the one who should have been on a business trip to Kansas, had suffered a fatal car accident in Hawaii. And he wasn’t alone.

For Jacks, laying her husband to rest was hard. But it was even harder to think that his final moments belonged to another woman—one who had left behind her own grieving and bewildered fiancé. Nick, just as blindsided by the affair, wants answers. So he suggests that he and Jacks search for the truth together, retracing the doomed lovers’ last days in paradise.

Now, following the twisting path of that fateful road, Jacks is learning that nothing is ever as it seems. Not her marriage. Not her husband. And most certainly not his death…

First Chapter, First paragraph, Tuesday Intros

My paragraph:

It was a summer of firsts.  The first month of our first summer in Vermont. The summer solstice, June the twenty-first: the first time I went to my garden naked.

What do you think?
Should I keep on reading?

It might not be a book I would have chosen on my own, but I have to keep on reading, as it's for my 'Totally Lit' bookclub next week.
I'll let you know what I think.

Here is what Goodreads says:
(it has 3.6 stars)

In a remote forest of northern Vermont, Katelyn Cross takes five women on a wilderness canoe trip where they hope to come up with ideas for saving their dying town. Although the river is not always what it seems and the women have not left their problems behind, a painting ritual creates a new way to look at the world - and themselves. Artist Katelyn Cross loves Greg Mazur and he loves her. He wants to be married but a previous relationship that went sour has made Katelyn overly cautious about any permanent commitment. And what about Greg's first wife? He lost her to cancer and Katelyn worries that he's only looking for a replacement. What's a girl to do? Canoe down a river with five gal pals, camp out, catch fish, talk about life and men. The problem is, a river can be as unpredictable as any relationship and just as hard to manage. On their last day, when the river turns wild, the women face the challenge of a lifetime and find that staying alive means saving themselves first while being open to help from a most unlikely source. As Katelyn navigates the raging water, she learns how to overcome her fear of change in a world where nothing stays the same. When Katelyn returns to her garden, she'll face one more obstacle and the naked gardener will meet the real Greg Mazur.

What readers are saying about The Naked Gardener:

Lyrical ... Scandalous ... Empowering ... Exhilarating ... Honest ... Sensual ... Fun ... Gentle ... Pleasurable ... Transporting ... Timeless

In her first novel, award winning writer L B Gschwandtner explores the push and pull of love, a woman's need to maintain her individuality within marriage, and the bonds that can make women stronger even when the world feels as if it's breaking apart.

My Paragraph:

They had been on the road for six days, a clan of five bouncing along in a tired wagon, when Bam White woke to some bad news.  One of his horses was dead.  It was the nineteenth-century equivalent of a flat tire, except this was the winter of 1926.
The Whites had no money.

What do you think?
Should I keep on reading?

The Book:

I do love a good non-fiction book once in a while and I'm pretty sure this is--but I'm a bit confused too.  Oh well, I think I'll read it!
It was a Daily Deal for my Kindle a few months back.

My Paragraph:

Prologue...From the journals of Gustavo Silva, Jr: Last entry
January 9, 2011

In prison you learn that no one is innocent.  It doesn't matter whether you were wrongly convicted, if your crime was justified or if life constricted your path so brutally that even the most heinous act   came to feel inevitable.  The cell accepts no excuses.  There, no matter who you are, the truth will coming looking for you, in all its darkness and mercy.  Either you look back unflinchingly or you die.

I think I will!

An  update!
On Tuesday, August 16th.  I posted my first intro paragraph about this book:

(If you want to see what you guys said about it, you can check out that post here)

And I did end up reading this one and I finished it last week.

From Goodreads:
In this funny, frank, tender memoir and New York Times bestseller, the author of A Homemade Life and the blog Orangette recounts how opening a restaurant sparked the first crisis of her young marriage.

When Molly Wizenberg married Brandon Pettit, he was a trained composer with a handful of offbeat interests: espresso machines, wooden boats, violin-building, and ice cream–making. So when Brandon decided to open a pizza restaurant, Molly was supportive—not because she wanted him to do it, but because the idea was so far-fetched that she didn’t think he would. Before she knew it, he’d signed a lease on a space. The restaurant, Delancey, was going to be a reality, and all of Molly’s assumptions about her marriage were about to change.

Together they built Delancey: gutting and renovating the space on a cobbled-together budget, developing a menu, hiring staff, and passing inspections. Delancey became a success, and Molly tried to convince herself that she was happy in their new life until—in the heat and pressure of the restaurant kitchen—she realized that she hadn’t been honest with herself or Brandon.

With evocative photos by Molly and twenty new recipes for the kind of simple, delicious food that chefs eat at home, Delancey is a moving and honest account of two young people learning to give in and let go in order to grow together.

From Me:
I love memoirs.
I love foodie books.
I love Molly Wizenberg.

I think a long time before I posted this on Tuesday Intros, my friend, Kathy from Bermudaonion blog, after hearing that I read A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg, suggested Delancey to me.  So, thanks to Kathy and all of you who encouraged me to read on.
4 stars from me.

My paragraph:

Lou hoisted up her gown and winced as she tottered across the parking lot. the sparkly four-inch heals had looked so pretty in the box, but they felt like mortar and pestle grinding each bone in her foot.  She missed her green crocs.

What do you think?
Should I keep on reading?

My book:

Yes, Women's Fiction/Chick Lit but also a Foodie book.
(sigh) I love a good Foodie book.
Hope this one is a good one.

My paragraph:
It is dark, dark seven A.M. on Christmas Eve Eve.
Snow flurries fall in the city.  Actors walking home from a cast party on Broad  Street try to catch them on their tongues.  The ingenue lands a  flake on her hot cheek and erupts into a fit of laughter.  In Fishtown, a nightmare trembles through the nose and paws of a dog snoozing under the construction flats.  The Ritten-house Square fountain switches to life with a pronouncement of water while Curtis Hall musicians, late for final rehearsal, arpeggiate through the park.

I have chosen this for our December read in one of my bookclubs.

My paragraph:

"What's a girl like you doing stuck in a place like this?" the bartender asked, muscles straining against his hotel uniform as he threw down a cocktail napkin in front of me.
I looked around: three bar-stools, four fake dusty palm trees, fluorescent lighting. This was the kind of join that offered vending machines in lieu of room service.

Should I keep on reading?
What do you think?

This is my book

It might not be for everybody, but.... it's
A memoir--which I love,  a spiritual search, which I love, kind of funny, which I love.
I think I'll keep reading.

My paragraph:

When Josey woke up and saw the feathery frost on her windowpane, she smiled. Finally it was cold enough to wear long coats and tights.  It was cold enough for scarves and shirts worn in layers, like camouflage.  It was cold enough for her lucky read cardigan, which she swore had a power of its own.  She loved this time of year. Summer was tedious with the light dresses she pretended to be comfortable in while secretly sure she looked like a loaf of white bread wearing a belt.
The cold was such a relief.

What do you think?  Keep on reading?

My Paragraph:

If you want to get Brandon's family talking, you need only ask about his childhood tantrums, aaannnnnnnnd they're off!  Their descriptions are sufficiently vivid that you'd think he'd had a screaming meltdown in the family car last week. But if you ask Brandon about his tantrums, he'll tell you that he was constantly hungry, and that low blood sugar will bring out the wailing, shrieking lunatic in anyone.

What do you think? Keep on Reading?

My paragraph:

Of all my many murders, committed for love and for better reasons, the first was the most important.
Already this project proves more difficult than I had ever imagined.  Autobiographies depend upon the truth; but I have been lying for such a very long, lonesome time.

My Paragraph:
Passengers in the row behind muttered the Lord's Prayer.  Ella, however, had no plans to make her final peace with God or die in the clouds.  She had a battle to conduct on the ground, after she'd cleared baggage claim at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
The Plane lurched and a baby screamed.
Eyes closed, Ella inhaled through the heartburn that had stalked her since Felix's text had dinged over the flight attendant's directive to power off electronic devices.  Delivered with perfect timing--no possibility of retaliation--her husband's message had been a  deceleration of war.  Signed without a kiss.

MY PARAGRAPH:
The first time I died was the summer I turned seventeen. I remember the air being so hot you could smell the pluff mud baking in the sun, the scent sulfur-sweet and strong enough to curl your toes, the tall stems of sweetgrass listless, their tips bowed in submission.  Blood sat like melted copper in my open mouth as I rose above my broken body, splayed like a rag doll beside the dirt road.  Let me go, I thought as I hovered, weightless.  But  I felt the pull of a gossamer thread of conscience and retribution that tethered me to this earth.  Before I heard the screams of the sirens and my mother's wailing, I knew I wouldn't stay dead for long.

MY BOOK:

MY THOUGHTS:
I think I will keep reading it!

The other night when I had finished a book, this one was in the  pile of 4 from me to choose from!
I posted this pic that night:
(I wanted help choosing)

I always ask the Handyman for some help choosing a new book to read because it's sometimes hard to me to pick--there are so many I want to read!  But, as usual, the Handyman walks by and taps the first one in line.
(Along the Infinite Sea was first in line, )
but I even asked him if I could read the first paragraph to help him better help me!
Hey--it works for this meme, right?

He said no thank you.
And just looks at me and shakes his head!
And said....AND SAID that.... said that, "I was weird".

Can this  marriage be saved???
