Firsts of 2014

Happy New Year!
Okay, so it's not  January 1st, but,  I have not been home, so all my planned Christmas posts and New Year's post have taken a back seat.
Well actually, I threw them out the door.
I left town a few days before Christmas to be with my mom who was very ill.  It was unplanned, but I am very glad I did it.  And things are looking up.

So today I would just begin the new year by telling you my firsts!
I had so wanted to link with Book Journey and do a "first read of the new year' post.  Complete with pictures!!   But I never signed up for it because of my uncertainty of where I would be and what I would be doing.

So in lieu of that, I just thought I'd share with you today some of my firsts!  and lasts of 2013.

First book:

Manson: The Life and Times of Charles MansonManson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson by Jeff Guinn
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was interesting okay?!  I got a lot of interesting questions about why I was reading a book about Charles Manson.  It was a very interesting book about the life of Charles Manson....yes it comes to a very dramatic and horrendous climax with the Tate/LaBianca murders, but it also gave a deep look into Manson's early life and a fascinating look at America during the 1960's.

I read  57 books last year, but I had signed up to challenge myself to 50.  Goodreads rated me as an overachiever. (That's funny)
This year I am challenging myself to 52----one a week.  The Handyman says I should do 58, but  I am playing it safe.

My last meal of 2013:

My sister in law is from Guam and this is their (her family's) traditional meal for either Christmas eve or New Year's Eve.
Lumpia (like an egg roll. )
Pansit  (the noodle dish)
Red rice
and... some pickled radish thing.  (the yellow circles)
It was all very good.

My first sporting event of 2014:

watching my nephew play hockey.   He's played hockey since he was 3 years old and now he is 16.  He's very good and has a couple of colleges looking at him.
To make things extra exciting--they beat the first place team this night!
Woot Woot!
(that's my sister-in-law and The Handyman watching the warm up before the game)

Below is my nephew coming out of the penalty box.

First animal of 2014:

I have inherited my mom's little Pomeranian dog.  This is just temporary, until my mom is capable again and my dad is not traveling back and forth.  It was the best option for everyone....BUT....The Handyman and I are  'big dog' people.  Not  'lap dog' people.   This should be interesting.
I will keep you updated.

RESOLUTIONS FOR 2014:
My usual resolution ---sending a birthday card to all my friends and family--well, I've already ruined it as I have a  January  1, 2, 3 and 4 birthday, but I was not home and traveling.  I guess I could send "better late than never" cards to them.

Not to buy any cooking magazines this year.  They are hella (a word my kids used to use. Probably so out of date now) expensive!!  $5 to $12 for a magazine!!  And I would buy one every time I went to the grocery store.  YIKES!

This isn't a resolution, but we are going to do a half-marathon in October--we are WALKING it--The Columbia River Gorge marathon.  So, we do need to 'train' to walk the 13.1 miles.
I've invited all my friends and family to participate.

To start writing letters to people  AGAIN.  I used to be  a great letter writer.  I hate that it has fallen off of my  plate.  I love it. And I think people love getting a real letter in the mail.

Sunday update:
It is 12:57 pm.

I am sitting at my desk in front of my computer.  (I don't have a lap top) But I do have a new 'notebook' from which I can instagram etc.  I just haven't been using it because I had no internet access up at my mom's for a while.  My dad forgot the password for their internet/wireless, etc and my mom couldn't tell us. )

Food or drink:  I am drinking  a Dr. Pepper and was munching on the last of the Chex Mix---not being good at all, but getting ready to begin tomorrow.  Even tho it's not listed  as a resolution, don't we all at least try to be healthier come the New Year?  It's a good thing to strive for.

Reading:
I am just going to start  "Unorthodox"  The scandalous rejection of my Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman.

I know....strange reading beginnings.

Listening:

I want to buy this CD.  It's songs of the Everly Brothers sung by Norah Jones and that guy from Greenday.

Watching:
Football.  The Handyman has football on.  Looking forward to the new season of Justified on Tuesday.

Cooking?:
I have no idea.  (sigh)  I should probably think of something soon.

What's ahead:
Going back to work this week after being gone for 2....and an unexpected 2 weeks at that.  I am supposed to have a board meeting tomorrow night but the president said she would be in favor of postponing until the week after-THANK GOODNESS!!
Getting my house De-Christmased.  Except for the spirit, of course.
Looking forward to Tuesday morning  6am coffee with one of my BFF's  or do you say  Bestie?  I am so bad at trendy slang.
And having lunch with my 2 lunch buddies.  Also  Bff's/besties.  (really, I must quit trying to sound trendy)

Have a good week!

I'll admit to having an interest in his personality too ... I still marvel at how such a warped sociopath could gain such control over a group of people and con them into performing such heinous acts ... but then again, I've always been intrigued by Hitler too. Some people are just so strange that they make you shake your head and wonder ...

Happy New Year! Read on!

I'm glad things are looking up for your mom. It's so hard to be away from your parents as they age. By the way, I have a feeling y'all will be lapdog people soon!

I want to read Manson even though you only gave it a 3. I can't figure out why I like to read about people like him.

Happy New Year!
