My month in books

Before I begin to share what I'm reading, I just wanted to remind you that today is  "It's Monday, What are you Reading"
Hosted by Sheila over at Book Journey.
You should check it out for many great reads and many great blogs.
Trust me.

Sometimes January depresses me--birthdays never do, but the turning of the new year does.  It's the same thing I figure--that feeling of where does time go?
I am 54, this year I will be 55. That number doesn't bother me, but January? With the whole blank year just waiting to be written...and it always kind of scares me to what might be written.
Just for a week or so tho, because basically I am a glass half-full kind of person.
Life's too short to not enjoy the ride,  right?

But having said that--there is still that short period of time, the first of January, after cleaning your house of the holiday and it's cold and gray and boring, where I do embrace the melancholy of the  "blank year" mystery.

But not this year!!
I am so excited for this month to begin (yes, I know it's the 6th today, but I've been gone)--it's like a new clean slate--FOR BOOKS!

This month I am reading:

For the Library Book Club
We  meet once a month for one hour in the library.

For the UMW (United Methodist Women) Church Book Club
We meet quarterly in the church conference room, usually with sack lunches or a quick bite, visit and book discussion.

For Lit Wits
I love these women!!
We meet once a month at someone's house where the host cooks dinner for all of us!
It's the book and cook club.
Let's just say:  what happens in book club, stays in book club. (like the boob cake when we read 50 Shades of Gray)
One night 2 1/2  years ago, one of our members had her baby on a book club night--it was quite exciting, as we all stayed at book club to get updates together, etc.

For Totally Lit
I love these women too!
We meet once a month at a member's home.
Or at the wine bar
An annual dinner at a local (35 miles away) bed and breakfast.
We also have a semi-annual pageant for:
Miss Hot Dish
Miss Appe-TEASE Her
Miss Congealdiality  (congealed salads--a word we don't use in the west: congealed, so we thought it was a fun one.)

I know I talk about them all the time--my book clubs.  I just love them.
All of them.

This is what I'm reading just for fun this month:

*****************************************
There is also a fun little meme over at Should be Reading called
I always like to 'muse' a little.
One of the musing questions is:
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).

and my answer is:
I had to leave fast a few days before Christmas to go be with my parents.  I didn't take any of my Christmas gifts with me---and honestly, I knew the Handyman had not yet bought me my annual gift of new slippers, etc---so I knew I was going to be at my brother's house for Christmas morning, and I ran into a book store and bought myself two books, wrapped them up and put them under their tree!

Manson--because I read about it on NPR books and it just sounded interesting
and a David Sedaris book (Naked) because  my friend Kathy at Bermudaonion told me that anything by Sedaris is funny.  (she thinks I forget stuff, but I do not.  I also  have her Neil Young autobiography audio  CD's that I need to blog about and get back to her someday.  I'm looking for some really cool Nevada stuff to send, but I can't find any really cool Nevada stuff.  Lots of sand and sagebrush... tumbleweeds, etc)

They were all very surprised that Santa had not forgotten me. (they too, got me a nice little gift)

And that answers my Musing Monday---the most recent books I have bought for myself and why.

Happy Monday!

It looks like you're in for some good reading! I haven't read Naked so I really hope it's funny. I don't want the Neil Young audio back - pass it on to someone else. Happy New Year!!

It's so wonderful to hear how excited you get about reading and your book clubs, Debbie. If not for reading my cookbooks, I fear I would never pick up a book. So sad from a "kid" who read so much as a child. Thank goodness my grand-daughter is an avid reader. She's only eleven. Hopefully she will always keep that sense of wondering what the next book brings.

I have vowed to read one book this year. Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury. My next trip to the library I will be getting it.

I have a plethora of mood swings in the month of January. I've learned to go with it recently but "when I was your age,:)" I was constantly half-full, half-empty:)

Thank you so much for sharing, Debbie..

Debbie, you talking about book clubs makes me want to find one in our area. It sounds like lots of fun getting together with like-minded folks. I see you mentioned Justified – we just started watching that show and have seen the first 3 seasons via netflicks. Love it!
